The best way to Shake Off Some Pounds

A well known news magazine assembled a panel of 22 experts in nutrition and diet to make the best choice.

Diets are on the lips of many North Americans as well as Mexicans. Diet methods and programs are available everywhere. You can find them in bookstores, on the internet, and every downtown seems to have a diet “center,” but which are the cream of the crop, with proven success, and that provide a healthy balance of food that allows you to drop the pounds you need?

You’ve heard that obesity increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes. But you might not know that the extra weight can have other serious health consequences, including cancer.

A new study found that 10 percent of all gallbladder, kidney, liver, and colon cancers could be attributed to excess weight. A whopping 41 percent of uterine cancers were tied to obesity,

More than 36 percent of Americans are now considered obese, an additional 34 percent are considered overweight. That is 70% of the 300 million people.

U.S. News can tell you, as they checked the nutritional completeness and safety of 20 different weight-loss systems and came up with a ranking that can help you make an informed decision.

A popular news magazine assembled a panel of 22 experts in both nutrition and diet and developed seven categories of criteria to judge their overall health measure.

Each diet was given a healthiness score, with the top score being a 5. Additional emphasis was given to the safety of the diet, for instance a diet of lemon, water and honey may allow you to shake off many pounds quickly, but the dieter will suffer in the long run.

The panel gave high marks to. . . . . The panel gave high marks to the DASH Diet, TLC, Mediterranean, Mayo Clinic, Volumetrics and Weight Watchers. On the other end of the spectrum, with scores lower than a 3, were the Paleo Diet, Raw Food Diet and the Atkins Diet, all due to the fact that they are very restrictive in nature and make it difficult to get an adequate amount of all daily required nutrients.

“The ones that get high scores in safety and in nutritional value—they’re very similar to each other,” says a registered dietitian who serves on U.S. News’s expert panel.

Worldwide, sweetened drinks cause 133,000 deaths from diabetes, 45,000 from cardiovascular disease, and 6,450 from cancers.

Consumption of sugary drinks results in some 184,000 deaths worldwide each year, a new analysis found.

Scientists pooled data from dozens of dietary surveys and large prospective studies of the effect of sugar-sweetened beverage intake on body mass index and Type 2 diabetes, and of the effect of B.M.I. on cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer. They used data on sweetened drink consumption from 62 national dietary surveys, which included more than 600,000 people in 51 countries surveyed between 1980 and 2010.

For confirming disease-specific causes of death, researchers used the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk Factors 2010, an international analysis that is periodically updated.

Deaths linked to sugary drinks as a percent of all deaths from these causes varied widely by age and country, from less than 1 percent among Japanese people older than 65 to 30 percent in Mexicans under 45. In the United States, about 25,000 deaths a year are caused by sweetened drinks.

There’s no need to drink these beverages, they’re causing tens of thousands of deaths, and we should eliminate them from the food supply.
